National Day of Women Living with HIV to be marked with morning tea at the AIDS Action Council

National Day of Women Living with HIV

The National Day of Women Living with HIV is marked annually on March 9 and this year the AIDS Action Council will be hosting a morning tea on the verandah of their offices.

The National Day was launched in 2016 by the Femfatales, the National Network of Women Living with HIV to increase the visibility of women living with HIV and start important conversations about HIV prevention for women.

The Kirby Institute’s 2016 Annual Surveillance Report estimates that 25,313 people were living with HIV in Australia at the end of 2015. Women make up roughly 10% of this figure. Most women living with HIV acquire the virus via heterosexual sex and are often diagnosed in the late stages of HIV, when the virus has already had a significant impact on the body.

AIDS Action Council Executive Director Philippa Moss said “The Council is here to support everyone living with or impacted by HIV. We want to make a space for the voices of women living with HIV, to hear their stories and celebrate their lives.

“This day also serves as a reminder that while the numbers of women in Canberra living with HIV is relatively low, we must not become complacent and allow the assumption that women are not at risk of contracting the virus. Our conversations about testing, prevention and treatment must actively include women”

All are welcome to the Council’s morning tea on Thursday March 9 from 10am, at our offices at Havelock House.
