May update from Philippa

I can't believe it's already May and we’re well into the colder end of Autumn, although it wasn't hard to keep the heater off, until after Anzac Day this year! The colourful leaves have been dropping off the trees and the change of seasons has also brought about new changes and exciting ventures for the Council.

Queer in Canberra

“QUEER” IS NOT A WORD THAT IS UNIVERSALLY RECOGNISED OR UNDERSTOOD; SO, I’D LIKE TO EXPLORE WHAT IT IS TO BE A QUEER WOMAN IN CANBERRA AND WHY THIS 50-SOMETHING, MOTHER OF TWO HAS EMBRACED THE TERM.

I am old enough to remember when queer was used pejoratively to mean “strange” or “peculiar”. The word was reclaimed in the eighties as a deliberately provocative, or political, term for people who identified with the LGBT community, but saw themselves as maybe more, or other, than the initialism represented.

In the first survey we will also ask you some questions about your life in the period just before you were diagnosed. The survey will take about 35–45 minutes to complete. (The follow-up surveys will be shorter.)

As 2018 draws to an end and the festive season here upon us, it is a great time to share the love and donate to the Trevor Daley Fund (TDF).

TDF supports people living with HIV. This year we have assisted new and existing clients to support their journey to live well with HIV.
