Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer Women's Health Conference, 2017
"Attending the Lesbian Bisexual and Queer Women’s Health Conference 2017 on 13th and 14th of July at the Teacher’s Federation in Sydney was an insightful and fulfilling experience."
I attended a number of workshops that directly related to the young people that I work with in my role as the Youth Programs Team Leader for the YWCA Canberra.
Since returning from the conference I have been given many opportunities to share the knowledge I gained from the conference with staff from across the community sector. I’ve had opportunity speak about my experience at the conference at the YWCA Canberra Community Service Portfolio meeting that includes staff from the YWCA Canberra’s counselling service, housing program, youth engagement and community development.
When returning from the conference I brought all materials gathered from the conference to the YWCA Canberra A-Z Group aimed at young people identifying as LGBTQI+ and allies. The group was able to have a look through some important messaging and promotion about their health and I promoted a discussion on the knowledge gained.
Some of the most interesting and most relatable workshops to my currently role at the YWCA Canberra were:
• "Breaking the Silence: Trans Women, Feminine Non-binary People and Sexual Assault"
• Awombda Codd “Drink Limits: A therapeutic group program for LBQ women wanting to change their alcohol use”
Thank you for the sponsorship from the LGBTQI Community Consortium. I appreciated the opportunity to attend the Lesbian Bisexual Queer Women’s Health Conference in 2017, and am very excited to continue to implement the learnings from the conference in my work with LBGTQIA* young people.
Thank you again to the consortium for an amazing opportunity!
